Black Owned Cannabis Businesses in Washington DC Deserve a Fair Chance
The Generational Equity Movement is standing up for our community. The DC City Council & Mayor Muriel Bowser are going to pass legislation to make cannabis legal & leave businesses like ours behind. By making recreational cannabis legal their way, they propose to shut down our businesses overnight.

About

Who we are

The Generational Equity Movement is a coalition led by 5 Black-owned cannabis businesses inWashington, DC. Our growing coalition is the voice for Black, millennial business owners who make up a meaningful segment of the local I-71 market. The GEM Coalition supports a strong, safe, and regulated cannabis industry in the District. The Generational Equity Movement Coalition has worked hard to expand safe access to cannabis, employ DC residents, and operate within the uncertain confines of the law, aka “the gray.” In doing so, we have also created spaces for mindfulness, creativity, and growth in the workplace.

BEHIND OUR MISSION

Why We Do It

Our team consists of local DC natives who have experienced everything from: birth, unforgettable bike rides in the scenic Rock Creek park, free field trips to the Air and Space Museum, cookouts at Fort Dupont and Anacostia Park, profound tours of Frederick Douglass’ home, and many other gems that only a DC native can truly cherish.

We love our city even when it hasn't loved us back; whether we’re battling childhood traumas ignited by the aftermath of gentrification, unjust laws that have caused our loved ones to be wrongfully incarcerated, poor public schooling that led to shortcomings in education and beyond, or territorial gang violence that has caused us to lose our friends. Washington DC is and will forever be a place we call – our home.

What we believe in
Equality means that everyone gets a fair chance – we demand equity.

Generational Equity Movement is asking Washington DC in having a real chance at continued prosperity through the obtainment of a recreational marijuana dispensary license. We're thoroughly familiar with the ways in which DC laws are changing and will make strides to ensure that equality is ensured when license applications are submitted.

What are we asking

We believe that priority in the application process, equity in access to capital, and protection for our current cannabis economy while DC makes these changes. The ruling class in DC must acknowledge the positive economic impact and flourishing cannabis economy businesses like ours have created – despite lack of regulatory oversight. We need your help. The Mayor and DC City Council must pass a bill that puts the focus on equity and the priority on Black ownership in the cannabis industry.

Today, they are looking at creating a completely new way to cultivate, process, and sell cannabis. While the legislation before them emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusion when it comes to minority participation in the cannabis industry, they do not go far enough

What the Council and Mayor propose to do creates barriers to equity for our community and a barrier to entrance into the industry we’re helping to build. By making recreational cannabis legal their way, they propose to shut down our businesses overnight. We know the opportunities related to growing, processing, and retail cannabis are already an incredible reach for minority business owners – especially for the millennial generation. We need to stay in business to have a fighting chance.
